BBC iPlayer, now with flashy goodness

BBC iPlayer

Well, it looks like the BBC has done some good work and made an online iPlayer version which runs on flash.

This allows you to view the programmes you pay for (yes you tax payers) on more then just Windows :)

You can’t download them to your PC on other operating systems but that doesn’t matter so much to me, I want to watch it on demand, not download it then watch it when I want.

Check it out: BBC iPlayer

Its a very nice interface, especially when you goto send the link on, nice touch with the zoom out of what your watching BBC :)

Its a pity the bbc couldn’t have used a free format, or a format with a free implementation available for the player.

It would have been better for them to use a free format or at least an open standard but its a step in the right direction and it seems Channel 4 are doing something similar now: http://www.channel4.com/4od/index.html

I’m sure you used to have to pay for anything you watched via 4OD.

Anywho, although yes, I agree with you in principle, I think that it would be asking a little much.

4OD uses the same proprietary + DRM technology as iplayer, right down to the Kontiki P2P mechanism.
4OD is also free to watch,

Kontiki P2P, thats what 4OD uses offline but looking at the Channel 4 Website I was under the impression that it was web based too.

On an asside note, that software isn’t very good, it broke on my gfs laptop and no amount of uninstalling, repairing, reinstalling would fix it enough for the service to start again. Anyway, I digress.
