Music Applications

Wednesday, July 25th, 2007

Why is it that music on the PC now seems to have taken so much importance that it warrants a full screen application to manage your music. Surely music should be heard and not seen?

Long gone appear to be the days of Winamp style interfaces, XMMS hasn’t been updated for ages and looks unlikely to get updated and the latest in the long line of offerings all appear to be this full screen itunes-esque interface:

Glest

Since I have recently gotten my ATI GFX card (Radeon 9600) working in Fedora 7 with the new drivers released from AMD/ATI I have been trying out various games.

One of the better ones is Glest. Its a real-time strategy game like those such as Command and Conquer but is based on mythical creatures and characters.

There are two factions, tech and magic. Basically the tech have things like humans, knights etc and the magic have wizards, summoners etc.

This game is fantastic, if a little bit on the difficult side at times. If you like RTS games then give it a try, its free and there is a bustling forum on their website for you to try out. The graphics are amazing for a free game and gameplay is intelligent too.

Check out the screenshots and give it a try.

RE: iPhone Flaw

Tuesday, July 24th, 2007

This is more like it:

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2007/07/24/iphone_security_vulnerability/

A proof-of-concept website that exploits the vulnerability secretly siphons SMS text messages, contact information, call history and voice mail. And one of the researchers who wrote it says it would be trivial to effect other misdeeds, including turning the iPhone into a bugging device by surreptitiously switching on the audio recorder and uploading audio files. Stealing a user’s passwords, email messages and browsing history is also possible.

New PC spec changed slightly

Friday, July 20th, 2007

Not that this is of much interest to people but I just wanted to make a note that since I originally spec’d out my PC its changed to the below:

PC Spec 2

I’m not able to afford this at the moment having had a bill from the dentists at over £400!! Halfway there though, only about £180 left to pay for the next 2 visits.

New Apple iPhone Security Flaw!

iPhone

OK, you might have seen these headlines around at the moment mentioning that the Apple iPhone has a massive flaw that could make people more susceptible to phishing attacks.

And what is that flaw?

the iPhone’s email client does not display the URL when a link is selected, and that only the first 20 characters of URL are displayed in the iPhone’s Safari web browser.

I mean, come on guys. This isn’t even worth mentioning, its really scraping the bottom of the barrel looking for problems with a device that was expected to fail but has gone on to do quite well.

If people are STILL clicking links in emails that come unexpected then sorry guys, there is the exit door for the internet, take your free T-Shirt and pen on your way out.

If you really must pick holes in it, why not just go on about how its proprietary and only really stupid people with more money then sense actually buy into the whole Apple thing anyway!

LUG Radio Live 2007

Monday, July 9th, 2007

Well right at this moment I’m sat in a back room at The Quality Chin in Wolverhampton. The LUG Radio after show party. There are quite a few here and the comedy is still flowing. This is the best way to end a fantastic weekend of talks and free shit.
