Ease of use in their best interests?

OK, I get the feeling I might get ripped to shreds for this, but I was thinking, is it really in the programmers/developers best interests to create OpenSource or GNU software that is easy to use and easy to modify.
My thought process is this, I understand the whole software isn’t worth anything but services are argument but if the software was simple to install and setup (removing the need for support) and easy to modify (removing the need for development services) then there can’t be any money in it. So is it really in the best interests of the people creating the software to make it simple and document it if ultimately their removing one of the avenues of creating revenue from it?
And before someone suggests it, I’ve got The Cathedral and the Bazaar and I’ve read it, although it was a long time ago so I might need to re-read it.
