Remember Jungle.com?

Jungle.com Logo

I remember when this website was in competition with Amazon and seemed to be doing quite well. Then I forgot about it, and so did the world.

If you goto jungle.com now it redirects you to Argos. So, Argos bought it?

I dug up this: Jungle.com is sold for £37 million

So Great Universal Stores (GUS) bought Jungle.com back in 2000 then eh? And what did they do with it, considering it was “the second largest on-line retailer in the UK”, they just redirect jungle.com visitors to argos.com.

What a waste.

Elonex
Elonex has announced that it will be revealing their Elonex “One” on the 28th of Feb in Birmingham for the Education Show.

Education Show

There is very little information available at the moment but the reports are it comes preinstalled with a version of Linux and will have a detachable rubber keyboard which should be interesting.

It’s going for the Tablet-esque approach but is reported not to have a touchscreen. When more information is available I’ll post it but at the moment there are rumours that it will come in 1GB and 2GB storage models, both having WIFI but the latter being the only of the two with Bluetooth.

The full press release is available on their website: Elonex One

EeeManLUG

Yesterday I presented at ManLUG. First time for me, I feel it went alright.

The theme of the presentation was the Asus EeePC. As I own one I thought I would give a run down of its features, specs etc. I am in no way an expert on the EeePC but the presentation was to serve the needs of those who have only heard of it and not had the time or cause to look into it further.

I started just after 2pm and it lasted for about 40-50 minutes including time for questions and discussion throughout the meeting.

The presentation is below for you to view at your will, it was composed using OpenOffice Impress on the various machines I use, my work PC, my home desktop and the EeePC itself.

Ease of use in their best interests?

GNU Logo

OK, I get the feeling I might get ripped to shreds for this, but I was thinking, is it really in the programmers/developers best interests to create OpenSource or GNU software that is easy to use and easy to modify.

My thought process is this, I understand the whole software isn’t worth anything but services are argument but if the software was simple to install and setup (removing the need for support) and easy to modify (removing the need for development services) then there can’t be any money in it. So is it really in the best interests of the people creating the software to make it simple and document it if ultimately their removing one of the avenues of creating revenue from it?

And before someone suggests it, I’ve got The Cathedral and the Bazaar and I’ve read it, although it was a long time ago so I might need to re-read it.
