She said call me now baby I’d come a running…

Wednesday, September 24th, 2008

In the past week and a half I’ve bought two Kings of Leon albums. Now, the Kings of Leon aren’t a band that I’d ever really gotten into, I liked The Bucket but other then that I’d not heard much other then the odd track on the radio.

So, I was in HMV and I picked up:

Kings of Leon - Because of the Times album
Kings of Leon – Because of the Times

This was only £4 in the HMV sale, so I thought why not, seen as they had a new album coming out and were at number one at the time.

To say this album is good is probably an understatement, its a great album, I can’t think of anything better to spend £4 on. My favourite track, predictable as it might be is On Call (hence the post title). Knocked up is a great track as is True Love Way. All cracking tracks. So, as I liked this album, I thought I’d check out their latest one, as I’ve recently became a fan of 7digital too, I wandered on over to their site.

So, I found that the album wasn’t out until the next day, but, it was only £5. £5 for an album! Sure, it was a download and didn’t have the artwork etc but it was a true MP3 download, 320kbps and no DRM.

Its still here for £5!!

This is how buying music online SHOULD be, I’d do it a LOT more if I had the freedom to do what I want with my tracks after. The added bonus with 7digital is that once you buy them, they are in your locker, so for example if your PC gets destroyed by a meteor you can log back into your account and download your music again.

Anyway, this isn’t a review of 7digital, I’ve already done that once

Kings of Leon - Only by the Night
Kings of Leon – Only by the Night

So, Kings of Leons new album, would I like it? Well, I was up quite late that night, so I waited till after 12 and downloaded it, put it on my MP3 player and gave it a good play in my car on the way to work.

To say this album is good is an understatement, nay, a travesty. This album is quite possibly the best album I’ve bought in a long time.

Three tracks in particular stand out to me from this album so far. Overall its fantastic, but here are my top three:

Sex on Fire: Their first single of the new album, a great up beat, get up and go out song. One worth putting on before a night out on the town. 8 out of 10
Revelry: A slow almost acoustic track. Haunting with its high guitar notes. A great chill-out song. 7 out of 10
Use Somebody: An up tempo song, thrashing guitar and plenty of cymbals brought to a crescendo with some fantastic lyrics. 8 out of 10

There are plenty other tracks here that are really, really good. I’d say 70% of the album is top class single quality.

There is no excuse NOT to buy this album, get it now.

Elonex Onet+ Laptop

I’ve finally received my Elonex Onet+ laptop. It was originally going to just be a One laptop but they offered me a free upgrade, so I took it.

Its specs are pretty basic, something like a 400mhz processor, 1GB storage space.

When I first opened it, the build quality was apparent that its less then A class. It feels cheap and light. But, on the other hand, it was cheap, and it is light. Its much lighter then my EeePC.

Another thing that I noticed is that it doesn’t look like its intended to be upgraded. So much so that you can’t even eject the battery. Its just inside a plastic cover with screws over it. I wouldn’t be surprised if inside the RAM is soldered straight onto the motherboard too.

Check out the pictures of it here: Unboxing the Elonex Onet+ PC

Its all pretty standard. Worth the £110 I paid for it though, even if it is just for accessing the internet.

Request for Help

Hello all,

I have a program in my head, but there is a problem. I’m not a programmer. I’m currently learning Python as I’ve heard its a good language to write applications quick, and that should keep my interest.

In the meantime, I’m looking for assistance or offers of assistance.

Now, the application. I work in a support environment, we have customers who require remote assistance, currently that is often offered by some means of VNC, normally a reverse connection. This however means interaction between a none technical user which doesn’t always go quite so simply.

So, my thought is why not have a middle man, or a gateway program. This program will be installed on customers machines and will provide a hook into the local VNC. It will connect to a web server and check to see if there have been any recent requests for connections, if there are it will forward that connection request onto the VNC service locally thus starting the connection without the need for user interaction.

I’d go into more detail but I think thats enough for now. If you are a developer, or maybe you would be interested in this application, drop me a comment and I’ll see what I can do regarding sorting out a project.
